Quick Reference Guide for Sulfuric Acid Applications

By Plast-o-Matic and Burt Process

The #1 highest volume produced chemical in the world is sulfuric acid. Handling sulfuric has everything to do with concentration. Here are the basics for using the right materials for the job in industries such as General Manufacturing, Food & Beverage, Pharmaceuticals, Chemical Processing, Pulp and Paper, Fertilizer and Phosphate Manufacturing, Chemical Waste Treatment and Battery Manufacturing. This information is provided as a broad reference. For more detailed chemical resistance guides, Compass Publications offers excellent printed resources.

  • PVC is rated acceptable for 80% concentration and below. Good chemical resistance, up to 140°F.
  • CPVC is rated acceptable from 80% to about 96% concentration. Good chemical resistance, up to 140°F.
  • PVDF is acceptable from 96% - 98% or at higher temperatures.
  • Halar – Plast-o-Matic has manufactured ball valves in Halar with special seals for concentrations higher than 98%. Consult the factory for these applications.
  • FPM (generic for Viton®) – excellent chemical resistance and sealing properties. It’s fluorinated and performs like flexible Teflon® - rated better than EPDM for all concentrations. Consult the factory for > 98%.
  • Teflon®- PTFE is used for the bellows and for diaphragm, extremely resistant to sulfuric acid even in higher concentrations.
