Energy Efficiency Pump Application
 Blacoh AODDampener™ case study

By Blacoh and Burt Process

THE APPLICATION

The energy efficiency of positive displacement pumps is intricately tied to the differential pressure they generate. As the pressure increases, so does the exertion on the pump. Reciprocating pumps, a common choice in industrial applications, introduce a challenge with fluid acceleration during discharge strokes, causing pressure spikes. A practical solution to enhance efficiency is the incorporation of pulsation dampeners. These devices, exemplified by their role in reducing pressure amplitude, alleviate the burden on the pump by accumulating a percentage of fluid at discharge pressure and releasing it during the inlet stroke. By focusing the pump's efforts on accelerating fluid between the discharge and the dampener, the setup minimizes variations in discharge line pressure, resulting in substantial energy savings.

Efficiency in Peristaltic Pumps and AODD Pumps

Extensive testing with peristaltic pumps demonstrated energy reductions ranging from 3.9% to an impressive 34.1%, with a 12% decrease observed in a 5-minute test using a 2.5” peristaltic pump (Figure 1). Notably, the energy savings consistently scaled with higher pump differential pressures. In the realm of air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps, where energy usage is constant due to compressed air requirements, pulsation dampeners prove valuable by enhancing flow rates. Tests exhibited flow rate improvements ranging from 2.5% to 12.8%, depending on differential pressure, with larger differentials yielding higher flow rates. Figure 2 illustrates how dampeners reduce discharge line pressure variations, allowing AODD pumps to operate with nearly constant discharge pressure.

 Blacoh’s AODDampener™

Blacoh introduces an innovative solution with the AODDampener™, designed specifically for AODD pumps. This stainless steel dampener, equipped with a PTFE-backed diaphragm for maximum compatibility, offers a cost-effective approach to enhancing pump performance. With automatic air control that adjusts to changes in pump discharge pressure, the AODDampener™ optimizes charge, reducing air consumption and providing both energy savings and increased flow rates. By addressing both direct energy costs and flow rate efficiency, Blacoh's AODDampener™ stands as a versatile and effective tool in optimizing AODD pump systems. Further operational efficiencies can be achieved by employing inlet stabilizer dampeners, which serve to standardize inlet pressure and flow. These dampeners play a pivotal role in eradicating acceleration head loss, ultimately prolonging the lifespan of pump diaphragms and components within the inlet system.
